From Shore to Shore ~ Sean Gavin & James Kelly

Seán Gavin is very excited to start a new project this spring, “From Shore to Shore.” He will embark on a musical journey through the United States, playing concerts, giving talks, and having conversations with musicians all over the country. His aim is to talk to other people involved in preserving traditional music, some well-known, some not, and bring their stories and tunes to a wider audience, through social media. During these tours, he will play concerts (often alongside these conversation partners,) meet new people, and enjoy the countryside along the way. First up is New England in the Spring, then the South in the summer. He looks forward to seeing you on his journey, “From Shore to Shore!”

Join Seán and fiddler James Kelly for an evening of tales as only the Irish can tell them, and tunes handed down through generations to these masters of the tradition.

Seán Gavin, is one of the most highly regarded Irish musicians of his generation. Master uilleann piper and flute player, he is the first and only musician born outside Ireland to win the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal. His most recent recording, Music from the Lost Continent, with fiddler Jesse Smith, accompanist John Blake, and bodhran player Johnny “Ringo” McDonagh, was hailed by The Irish Echo as “traditional music at its best!”

Seán tours regularly with the groups Bua and Téada, both have gleaned top praise from Irish music critics. Seán was Musical Director for the PBS program “I Am Ireland", and for the long running Atlantic Steps. He has lectured on traditional music at the University of Chicago, St. Andrew's in Scotland, and many other locations. Seán is now back in his native Detroit where he continues to play, teach, and promote traditional Irish music. www.SeanGavinMusic.com

He has performed several times on “A Prairie Home Companion”, received the prestigious “Florida Folk Heritage Award” as well as the “Florida Individual Artist Fellowship in Folk Arts Award.” James was awarded the “Gradam Ceoil TG4 Irish Musician of the Year” in 2006, in recognition of his outstanding musicianship and contributions to Irish music. He has 18 albums to his credit; his most recent release is “Melodic Journeys.” He is currently working on a teaching DVD for fiddle students, as well as compiling his over 800 compositions for publication.

“James is one of the most outstanding Irish musicians of this or any generation.” –Dr. Mick Moloney, Musician and Folklorist, New York University
